Let us resolve that this era we are about to enter will not be what other postwar periods have so often been: a time of retreat and isolation that leads to stagnation at home and invites new danger abroad. What surpassed everything was that there was a little boy in the world who could have for the inferior age, sex, and intelligence so fine a consideration. O Mary, refuge of sinners, intercede for him! O Virgin Undefiled, save him from the gulf of death! The English lesson began with the hearing of the history. It was this observation that drew from Douglas--not immediately, but later in the evening-- a reply that had the interesting consequence to which I call attention.
