Neverwinter's latest expansion has already arrived on PC, but as always, console players need to wait for another few weeks before they'll be able to venture into the depths of the Undermountain. In what Cryptic Studios promises will be the game's largest expansion ever, Undermountain will introduce a new campaign and a new Expedition feature, as well as making changes to classes, rewards, the companions system, and endgame challenges.
An unknown force beckons the people to the halls of Undermountain with visions of their deepest desires. Through a magical portal hidden along the Sword Coast, adventurers must seek a truth far more sinister. Renowned Waterdeep taproom, the Yawning Portal, acts as a hub for players looking to delve deeper into the hallowed halls shaped by Halaster Blackcloak’s twisted mind. Team up with Durnan – proprietor of the Yawning Portal -, as well as uneasy allies to uncover the wicked machinations at work below Waterdeep.
Lead Designer Thomas Foss, Systems Lead Jared Sears, and Systems Designer Chantelle Tatum take us through a pretty complete overview of what Undermountain brings to Neverwinter. They touch on the five zones that make up the Undermountain content, briefly cover the updates to the game’s classes, and provide a look at some of the new rewards and dungeon locales that make up Undermountain and its high-level Lair of the Mad Mage encounter. They even take a moment to acknowledge some new voiceover work from Ruty Rutenberg and Satine Phoenix from the D&D tabletop liveplay show Maze Arcana. Player Companions now fall into one of five categories. The more companions owned within each category, the stronger active companions will be with power upgrades. Synergy will create the biggest bonuses, however, the goal of these changes is to ensure all players can use whichever companions that they want, without punishment.Halaster Encounters – The Mad Mage’s influence can be felt throughout Undermountain, with unpredictable appearances presenting opportunities to witness his full control over this domain. After all, it is his home.
It stands to reason that our biggest expansion would take place in the largest dungeon in Faerun- the Mad Mage Halaster’s dungeon in Undermountain. We are excited to not only open up this Dungeon up to you in the manner of 5 new zones, and even deeper as adventurers unlock the repeatable expedition quests, which have our popular risk/reward system built in.One more thing- I want to take this time to give a special thanks to all of our players who joined in on both closed and open betas and provided vast amounts of valuable feedback during our production of Undermountain.
