2019 State of Origin TV Preview
State of Origin officially played its inaugural season in 1980, but it wasn’t until two years later in 1982 that the series took on its current three-game format. For the first couple of decades or so, the results were incredibly even, with the first 24 series resulting in 12 NSW victories, 10 Queensland wins, and two draws. Since then, the Maroons have taken over, winning eight in a row between 2006-2013, and 10 of the past 12. Last year, the Blues got the verdict and wrapped up the series in Sydney when down to 12 men in the last 10 minutes. Queensland played at home in the third game, a dead rubber, and were most impressive, giving them hope for 2019.
The 2019 Origin Series shapes up to be such a fascinating one. New South Wales headed in as the favourite to take out a second consecutive series for the first time since 2005, and at half time of Game 1 they were well on the way to victory with an 8-0 lead. The second half, however, saw an entirely different tale unfold, and three tries to the Maroons in the space of 18 minutes saw the underdogs take the chocolates and a 1-0 series lead. There are likely to be some changes for the Blues as a result of the second half collapse, with both Nathan Cleary and Cody Walker likely to come under some scrutiny. And yet, despite the Game 1 loss and the subsequent uncertainty surrounding the team, they will still head in as favourites to level up the series heading into the final game.
